The ICT Society of S. Thomas’ College was formerly known as the Computer Club. It was inaugarated in the year 1985. Mr. Siri Edirisinghe was the first Master-in-charge. Initially the club was begun in order to make the students literate in Computer Science.
Over the years with the rapid development of the IT field, it was apparent the club had a much bigger role to play in college.
In the year 2013, the Computer Club was renamed as the ICT Society and launched a new logo to reflect this. The previous name ‘Computer Club’ would suggest the club is limited to computer science. However with the changing times the club has expanded its horizons, dealing with not only programming and computer engineering, but social media, web development, mobile development, computer systems etc. By definition, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is often used as an extended synonym for Information Technology (IT), but is a more specific term that stresses the role of unified communications and the integration of telecommunications, computers as well as necessary enterprise software, middleware, storage, and audio-visual systems, which enable users to access, store, transmit, and manipulate information.
