English Drama Society

English Drama Society of S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia.

The Drama Society of S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia is the oldest Performing Arts Society in Sri Lanka and boasts a rich history and tradition..
The Society was founded in 1872 under the incumbency of the Revd. Dr. James Bacon, the fourth Warden of College and ever since, has staged many productions.
The first production was George Coleman’s – “Heir at Law” in 1872. In the late 1800s languages such as Latin and Greek were included in the curriculum, thus it is recorded that in 1885 the Thomians successfully staged “Cyclops” in Greek. The Society has always been mindful of performing plays which are not only entertaining but are also helpful to children in terms of the current curriculum. The plays produced have appealed to audiences of all ages. Plays from Greek and Roman Classics, Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde, and adapted works from Dickens and C.S. Lewis have been performed by young Thomians in the past decade or so. Amidst the aforementioned plays, a variety of modern dramas written by playwrights such as Dave Freeman and Michael Cooney have also been staged.
The prestigious Inter-School Shakespeare Drama Competition is not an unfamiliar event to S. Thomas’. The College emerged victorious in 1973 when the competition was held for the first time and has emerged winners for the most number of times in the history of this competition.
It is also noteworthy to mention that the College is one of the only schools that stages an annual production, on a major scale. Thus the active involvement of its actors assures a good exposure to the field and provides a sound experience.
Over the years, the ‘Dram Soc’ has rendered to young Thomians, unforgettable joyous memories, training and experience of professional acting and directing. In staging a play, the young actors not only perform, but also handle the majority of the production work. This has resulted in the College producing some of Sri Lanka’s most famous thespians, such as Leonard Arndt, Lucian de Zylva, Frank Goonewardena, Lionel Wendt, Rohan Ponniah, Christopher Ponniah, Steve de Zylva, Richard De Zoysa, Jith Peiris, Arun Dias Bandaranayake, Dylan Perera and Shanaka Amarasinghe to name a few.
