The Annual Thomian-Michaelite Basketball Encounter was held on the 1st of July at the S.Thomas’ College Upper Basketball Courts for the fourth year after its revival.
The U-16 match which commenced at 3 p.m. was a very tough encounter with both teams displaying exceptional skills in basketball, but in the end the Thomian side managed to take the win with the scores at 62-46 points. Afterwards the traditional Old Boys’ match was played and the Michaelite team was able to secure a close win by scoring 50 points to 49 points.
The eagerly awaited U-19 encounter commenced at 6.30 p.m. with the Chief Guest Dr. Naren Perera and the Warden Rev’d Marc Billimoria present to grace the occasion. The match began with the jump ball and the Thomian team gaining first possession and scoring the first basket. The Michaelites retaliated by scoring a couple of three-point shots but after a long battle the Thomians emerged victorious by beating the defending champions St. Michael’s College to take home the Crowther Challenge trophy.
The encounter ended with the awards ceremony. Aaron De Zoysa (STC), J. Subeshkanth (SMC) and Cheran Jayaratnam(STC) were named the Best Offensive Player, Best Defensive Player and the Most Valuable Player respectively. In the U-19 category Shevaan Perera, Captain of the Thomian team, was awarded the Best Offensive Player while Askar Silva of St. Michael’s College was awarded the Best Defensive Player and Chenuka Kasthuriarachchi of S. Thomas’ College was awarded the Most Valuable Player.
