Isipathana’s victory over the Thomians

The match went underway at Havelocks Sports Club on Saturday, under a slight drizzle which lasted nearly the whole match. The match was kicked off by Isipathana fly half Randy Silva. In the first few minutes of the game Isipathana threatened the Thomian backs by creating many overlaps but failed score during the match due to bad ball handling. After a while, the Thomians found the overlap in the Isipathana line but failed to score. The Thomians had the opportunity to add the first points on the board but Dion Dias failed to the get the penalty. Five minutes into the game,Isipathana winger RamithaHimash found the space to score the first try of the match;Chamodh Fernando’s conversion was unsuccessful. (IC 05 – 00 STC)

After awhile Thomian skipper Naveen Henankankanamge found space but was brought down short of the line, a few pick and goes and Thomian prop AdeeshaHadunpathirana scored the 1st try in the match for the Thomains. Dion Dias added the extras giving the Thomians the lead (STC 07-05 IC).Isipathana finally added pressure to the Thomian backs and in the 31st minute with Randy Silva cutting through the defense to score beside the post, Chamodh Fernando added the extras (IC 12-07 STC). Just before half time the host yet again foundRandy Silva scoring his double through a grubber in his half where his winger collected and gave into his skipper SumuduRankothge who was out numbered 2 to 1 and gave a nice long pass to his fly half Randy Silva to score; Chamodh added the extras (IC 19-07 STC).

The Thomians started the second half with the shaky start conceding a try in the 41st minute of the game. After a few minutes into the game the visitors got a hold of the ball battering through the Isipathana defence using the big forwards. The hooker Aabid Carder, barged his way over the line to score for the Thomians; Dion Dias added the extras (STC 14-24 IC). Isipathana once again used their line, and sent the young winger in the corner. Chamodh yet again showed no progress with his boot (IC 29-14 STC). At the hour mark, Thomian skipper Naveen Henakankanamge broke the line from collecting a nice box kick from his scrum half and heading his way under the post (STC 21-29 IC). With 20 minutes of play remaining,Thomians knew they needed to upset the Isipathana crowed but Isipathana took control of the match and from there onwards, It was all Isipathana with 2 back to back tries to upset the Thomian side. Full back Chamodh Fernando, did a quick pick and went over the line. Second rower RavinduAnjula, fell over the line and Chamodh added the extras to end the match (IC 41-21STC).
