On 13th March 2017 S.Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia hosted Trinity College Kandy for the 40th Trinity-Thomian Rugby Encounter played for the Canon R.S. De Saram Trophy. Trinity College remained unbeaten this season and was aiming to redeem the trophy as they had lost the trophy last season. As S. Thomas’ College lost to Wesley College in their previous game; the team was hoping to retain the trophy.

Trinity College kicked off first. Within the 1st 5 minutes Trinity College nearly sored a try. The 1st quarter went by with no try from either side. At the 23rd minute Amith Kulatunge of Trinity College scored the 1st try of the match. Afterwards Trinity College went on a string of tries with Avishka Sheik scoring at the 30th minute and Lashane Wijesuriya scoring at the 34th minute. At half time the score was Trinity College -19 and S.Thomas College -0 .At half time the Thomians lost their inspirational captain Naveen Henakankanamge. Just after half time Hans Walpola scored the 1st try for S.Thomas’ College. Even though the Thomian team was losing, Thomians young and old were still supporting the team. The final score of the day was Trinity College -29 S.Thomas’ Colllege -14 .Trinity College redeemed the Canon R.S. Desaram trophy. Diluksha Dange of Trinity College was awarded the Player of the Match.
