Royal take the M.G back to Colombo

The much awaited match between S.Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia and Royal College Colombo was on Saturday the 29th of April. Royal dominated the first few minutes of the game using their pack in the pick and drive option and running the ball wide giving the Thomian defense a tough time defending the Royal backs. After a few good minutes of defense, Royal center Janidu Dilshan spotting the overlap in the Thomian defense, found the gap to score the first points on the board for Royal. Shakir Nawfer added in the extras (RC 07-00 STC)
After minutes of going through the phases, the Thomians made it to the Royal 5 meter mark. After a series of pick and drives, the returning number 8 C J De Lile went over the line to score the first try for the Thomians bringing it to a 5 point game. Dion Dias added in the extras to bring the match to a 7-all game (STC 07-07 RC)

Royal yet again showing a threat to the Thomain backs, inside center Tulaib Hassan broke through the middle of the Thomian line of the defense, with the hope of scoring Royal’s 3rd try. Unfortunately for Royal he was taken out by Thomian Captain Naveen Henakankanamge , who with his try-saving tackle, gave the Thomians and the crowd hope. Minutes into the half time the Thomians were in the Royal territory going through the phases and adding pressure to the Royal forwards and backs. Royal conceded 3 back to back penalties. Soon Harith Senanayake broke Royal defense to score Thomians 2nd try of the match after a quick tap from a penalty. Dias converted and the Thomians took the lead going into the half time break.
Half time: STC 14 – RC 12
Royal were in the driving seat in the opening minutes of the second half of the match. Jaindu Dilshan and the Royal backs continued to put the Thomian defense under pressure, after a few minutes of play Shenouk Perera was sent to the sin bin, giving the visitors the 1 man advantage for ten minutes. Thomians were under pressure in their 22 work the ball to their captain Naveen Henakankanamge who broke Royal’s deadly defense but was unfortunate to find support and the ball was turned over by the visitors. After 3 long phases the royal winger Sabith Feroze went over the line in the corner for the visitors. Nawfer added the extra 2 point taking back the lead for Royal (RC 19-14 STC)
The visitors had the game going their way the line outs and their mauls kept the Thomians in their own half. A Thomian lineout in their 22 gave them the chance to clear the ball from their half but was stolen in the line out and after five phases Royalist Rishmal Fernando found the gap in the corner and outsmarted the defense to go crashing under the posts. Nawfer addd the extras for Royal (RC 26-14 STC)
The Thomians worked through the phases but didn’t get the opportunity to score, After a few minutes into the dying stages of the match the visitors K.De Silva were sent to the sin bin even with the 1 man dis advantage the Thomians were still unable to break the royal defense to score. The visitors again found space as Royal captain Ovin Askey stabbed a small grubber behind the Thomian defense for winger Yasis Rashmika to add points on the board. Nawfer sealed the deal by adding the extras for Royal (RC 31-14 STC) The hosts tried for one more attack to try get points on the board but were unfortunate to score, and the match thus ended with Royal victorious.
