After a disappointing ending for the Thomians on the second day of the 138th Battle of the Blues, Captain Romesh Nallaperuma and Sithara Hapuhinna continued to bat on day 03. Through both batmen’s aggressiveness it was evident that their plan was to get as many runs and invite the Royalists to bat. Unfortunately for Hapuhinna, he was dismissed shortly after reaching his half century. Nallaperuma’s aggressiveness caused him his wicket. He was given out for an appeal by the Royalists for an lbw. After the fall of the Captain’s wicket, the Thomians decided to declare. They had a lead of 102 runs. Only the courage shown through the bat by the two youngsters, T Senarathna and A Wickramasinghe kept the hope of the Royalists alive. Brilliant line length by Eriyagama (3/46) and Rathnayake (2/11) tore through the Royal batting line up. Senarathna scored only 50 runs before he was caught at leg slip.
Unfortunately for the Blue, Black and Blue the match was called off at 3.37PM due to bad light. The Royalists were 154 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. The Battle of the Blues played for the prestigious Hon. D. S Senanayake Memorial Trophy ended in a draw with the Royal camp retaining the shield. Even though the shield slipped through the hands of the Thomians, the awards for the Best Bowler, Best Batsman and Man of the Match were awarded to Kalana Perera, Ravindu Kodithuwakku and Romesh Nallaperuma respectively. Over-all, it was a great game of cricket!
