The S Thomas’ College Under 19 Tennis team emerged Champions for the second consecutive year at the National Schools Games Tennis Championship which was held at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) from the 3rd to the 6th of September.
The Thomian team who were placed at the bottom end of the draw, faced St Joseph’s College, Maradana, in the second round having received a walkover in the first round from Trinity College, Kandy. The first singles was played by Viranka Fernando who beat a valiant Manal Algama 6/0, 6/4. The second singles was played by Avindra Perera, who comfortably beat Richard Samarawickrama 6/2, 6/0, ensuring the team progressed to the semi-finals the next day.
In the semi-finals the Thomians faced the formidable Ananda College team and it was certainly no easy match. The first single was played by Viranka Fernando who was in great form, and after an intense battle he successfully overcame Vibudha Wijeyabandara 6/0, 6/2. Avindra Perera played the second singles against Nuwantha Dissanayaka. After a nail biting first set Avindra quickly closed the second set beating Nuwantha 7/6 (7/0) 6/0 thus gaining the Thomians a berth in the finals of the tournament.
In the Final, the Thomains were pitted against St. Peters College, Bambalapitiya, who had also won all of their matches in the Tournament thus far. The duel started with Viranka Fernando playing the first singles against Isuru Wijeratne. After a strong contest Viranka emerged the winner 6/0 6/2. U18 #1 ranked Avindra Perera played the second singles against Udayachandran Srinath beating him 6/2, 6/0, and the Thomains emerged Champions of the Tournament without losing a single set, let alone losing a match!
The winning team comprised of Sebastion Sansoni (Captain), Viranka Fernando (Vice Captain), Avindra Perera, Vihan Herath and Dulitha Ellawala, guided by the Coach Mr. Arjuna Anthony, Master-in-charge Mr. Fonseka and former national champion and Davis Cup player Mr. Rohan De Silva. The Captain Sebastian Sansoni made history by becoming the only Thomian Tennis Captain to successfully lead his team to victory in both the National Schools Tennis Championship and Public Schools Tennis Championship in a calendar year, And the Thomian Tennis team which has performed exceptionally this whole year has successfully completing the “Grand Slam” of the schools tennis circuit.
