On the 23rd of September, the under 19 Badminton team of S. Thomas’ College faced a disappointing lost at the annual badminton encounter against Royal College which was played for the Ranil Wijesekera Trophy at the badminton courts of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia.
The first single was played between Pasindu Wannisinghe (STC) and Nilesh Wijesekera (RC) in which Nilesh Wijesekera beat Pasindu Wannisinghe in the first round, 21 – 16 and 21 – 13 in the second round.
However, Lashan Mendis of S. Thomas’ College was successful in beating Dinuka Kaluarachchi, 21 – 16 in the first round and 13 – 22 in the second round. Lashan defeated his opponent with much difficulty in the final round for 22 – 20. This is the only badminton match which was won by the Thomians.
The third single was played between the captain of the S. Thomas’ team, Rehan Wijesekera who beat the captain of the Royal College team Thevin Rahubadda in the first round with the score 21 – 19. Unfortunately, Rehan Wijesekara could not continue his good work and lost the second round 15 – 21 and was once again defeated in the third round with the score 16 – 21.
Finally, the duel started with Thevin and Harindu of Royal College winning the first round 21 – 16 against Rehan and Pasindu of S. Thomas’ College. The match concluded with Royal College winning the second round 21 – 14, taking home the prestigious Ranil Wijesekera Trophy and leaving the Thomian badminton team wishing ‘better luck next time’.
