The S. Thomas’ College under 19 tennis team participated in the All Island Inter-School Tennis Tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Tennis Association which was held from the 11th to the 18th of July 2016. Under the expert guidance of Coach Mr. Anjuna Anthony, ably supported by Master in Charge Mr. Fonseka and two Old Boys, Mr. Rohan De Silva and Mr. Gehan Perera, the Thomian team was undefeated throughout the tournament
The team had a very difficult path when they were placed in the tougher group together with St. Peters College and Colombo International School (CIS). Despite beating both St. Peters (3-2) and CIS (3-2) in the group stage matches, the Thomians qualified only second due to CIS massacring St. Peters 5-0 and thereby gaining more points than the Thomian team at that stage.
As a result the Thomian’s had to face the strong Ananda College team in the Semi Finals. After both Viranka Fernando and Avindra Perera winning the first and second singles 6/3 6/1 and 6/2 6/1 respectively, the deciding match which was the second doubles was won by Captain Sebastian Sansoni and Dulitha Ellawala 6/4 6/4. Thus the Thomians, beat the Anandians 3-1, propelling the team into the finals against CIS.
The final with CIS was no easy match as CIS had a very formidable team. But with The Warden’s blessings and encouragement, the team went in determined to win. The first singles was won by Viranka Fernando 6/2 6/0. But the first doubles, which was played by Captain Sebastian Sansoni and Dulitha Ellawala was lost 6/3 6/4 making it one all. The second singles was won by Vihan Herath 6/0 6/2 putting the Thomians one up. Then CIS won the second double in a nerve wracking match against Senal Hemakumara and Thuvaragan Sabesan 7/5 3/6 6/2 and it was 2-2. Finally the decider was played by Avindra Perera against Joshua Jayaratne and Avindra won the title for the College by beating Joshua 6/1 6/3. S Thomas College emerged champions after a lapse of 29 years creating a historic moment not only for the tennis team but for the College as well.
