The Ifthar for the year 2016 was held at the Islamiah Home for Needy and Orphan Children, Ratmalana by the Islamic Society of S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia on the 25th of June. The event was graced by the Associate Chaplain of the College, Rev. Fr. Roshan Mendis and an Old Boy of the College, Mr. Ibrahim. The Home was founded in 1976 by prominent members of the Muslim community.
We were greeted by several small boys as our bus pulled over at the premises. All of us gathered at the Prayer Room where Mr. Ibrahim gave a speech on the importance of Ramadan and how they should be thankful to celebrate it in peace unlike many others followed by a speech by Fr. Roshan thanking the Islamic Society for inviting him to be a part of this event. A group of boys from the Home performed a Qaseeda followed by the Vote of Thanks given by another on behalf of the Home.
Following this, we gathered upstairs at the Dining Hall to break fast. After the breaking of fast the President of the Society, Atheeq Kaleem spoke thanking all those involved in making the event a success. This was followed by the Vote of Thanks on behalf of the College given by Tharik Jawahir, the secretary of the society. Plastic chairs as well as other items of necessary importance were provided to the home by Fr. Roshan as well as Mr. Ibrahim on behalf of the College to its caretaker.
With the end of the event, the boys of both the College and Home took part in Maghrib prayers together after which some were seen in friendly discussion while some were playing with each other regardless of the fact that they had met each other for the first time today or of their social and financial status. The boys of the Home had been assisted with while the boys of the College had gained an unforgettable experience in associating less fortunate children and charity.
